MARKET MECHANISM, A NEED FOR CREDIT MARKETS
Indian Credit Market has been growing at a steady rate over the years. The Bank Loans which was at Rs.114,982 crore in 1990-91 has grown to Rs. 2,770,012 crore as of March 2009. Even though the Bank Loans have been witnessing tremendous growth , most of these loans continue to remain in the books of the lenders.

In other words, unlike other international markets, Indian banks have not explored the possibilities of churning the loan assets for achieving better balance sheet management. One of the major reasons for this trend could be that there is no organized market mechanism that can provide the much needed liquidity.
Credit Market Services Limited is working towards transforming the current illiquid Credit Market into a developed credit market. For this purpose, CMSL has drawn an elaborate plan to usher in the best market practices through the Credit Market Academy. A few of the approaches are in terms of:

  • Transparency (through market mechanism)
  • Quality (through standardization)
  • Easy Access (through state-of-the-art technology platform)

GROWTH IN CREDIT MARKETS COMES FROM THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF BEST PRACTICES

  • Standardization (legal documents, operational processes, introduction of unique identification numbers for loans like ISINs that are used for equities and other securities)
  • Market Mechanism (anonymous trading platform, Mark to Market pricing, Rating / Risk assessment)
  • Diversity (providing access to the common platform for all market participants - Banks, Financial Institutions, Mutual Funds and Insurance Companies, and introducing innovative investment vehicles - such as CDOs, CLO’s, Credit Derivative Swaps etc,)
  • Continuous up-gradation of skill sets of the market participants, through structured training programs, certification courses, seminars, workshops and roundtable conferences etc.
